Removed molding showing that mold and rot extended all the way through and had started on the rear and bottom of the molding all along the piece.  The smaller part above was the horizontal member and it was rotted all along the length as a result of (a) inadequate caulking and (b) the molding was not protected by paint prior to installing (which is seldom done).  This molding was 8 years old.
