Not a lot of activity in this forum, so I thought I would post here first hoping to spark some activity.

I loaded about 6 geocaches into my Garmin 60CSx from geocaching.com. They showed up as a closed treasure chest as expected. I navigated to a couple of them today and wanted to mark them as found, but wasn't sure of the exact procedure to do this. The user's manual says that it will be marked as found when you arrive, but it just kept saying "arriving at [name of geocache]" on the screen even when I was there. I then pointed at it with the on screen arrow and hit the "mark" button. It then gave me a numbered waypoint (like 002) and marked the time and date and then placed an open treasure chest on the map. Is this what it should do? I was thinking it would still be marked with the geocache's name, but it is putting a new marker on the map.

Am I doing it correctly, or is there something else I should be doing.

Thanks again to everyone on this forum for all of the help getting started with this new hobby.

NG

Thanks Chinook. I took a look at the instructions listed, but they mention that there will be a "found" button on the screen. There is nothing like that on mine. The book manual doesn't reall provide any indication of this function either.

I did some digging online and found information similar to the instructions you posted the link for. They had some screen shots showing the "found" button on the bottom of the compass screen. It also showed the detailed notes about the geocache at the top of the compass screen. After reading my manual again, I see that it also makes reference to this same screen (although there are no pictures of it).

My unit does not have anything like this after selecting "go to" on the geocache screen.

I'm wondering if this was included in (or removed from) a software update. I am running software version 3.00 and GPS SW version 2.80. The web updater indicates that there are no additional updates available.

A couple of things to check if you've changed anything from the default settings. Check Main Menu -> Setup ->Geocache that the closed treasure chest is symbol specified for "Find". Also check Main Menu -> Setup -> Page Sequence that the Compass page is included.

Yes, the closed treasure chest is listed and shows up on the map when I hit find and select a geocache and select "go to". It even calculates the route to get there.

The compass page shows up, it just doesn't have any of the buttons or geocache data shown in the pictures I posted. It is just the standard compass screen (even while navigating to a geocache).

I will probably try tech support tomorrow to see if they can help.

Just thought I would come back and provide an update just in case anyone searches the forum in the future for the same problem. I spoke with Garmin Tech Support today. It ends up that if you go into "setup" on the main menu, select "routing" and then select "off road" as the guidance method, you will get the geocaching buttons on the compass screen.

My GPS was set to "follow road" and that was why it didn't go into the geocaching mode. This doesn't appear to be document anywhere, but I was glad they were able to help me.

I am having the same problem with my 60Cx and asked about it last month but never got the chance to see any replys before they moved this site and now it appears gone. Anyways I'm still having the same problem. I have checked on the menu "routing" and made sure it is selected to "off road" and this is the process I go thru, first I go to the menu, and setup, in setup I go to geocache and hit enter which takes me to geocache setup where there are two symbols, "find" and found", "find" is highlighted and the drop down menu of "calendar entry when found" is saying yes. I then hit the mark button which basically gives me my present location, I then change the coordinates to the cache I want to find, then hit "ok" which then takes me back to "waypoints" icon where I hit enter which takes me to a page that shows the waypoint number (like 003) with a blue flag, then I hit enter whcih takes me to the location page and I hit "go to" which takes me to the map that shows my waypoint location that is numbered (003) and is marked with the same blue flag and then when I go to the compass page there is notihing at the bottom of the page that says "found" "note" or "stop". So I'm assuming I'm not in the geocache mode yet. I've tried doing the steps differently but with the same results. I'm about to the point that the next cache I find I may leave this gps unit in it. I'm real frustrated with this thing if you can't tell. :? HELP PLEASE.

jphiker I remember your question from last time and my response was also lost in the shuffle. Basically geocaching mode begins when you navigate to any waypoint with the symbol you've selected in setup for an unfound cache (the default is the closed treasure chest)

Try creating a waypoint and editing the symbol to be the closed treasure chest (or whatever symbol you've selected in setup). Then select Go To for that waypoint and your 60Cx will go to the Geocache Navigation screen. You can move away from this screen to the map or any other screen to navigate to the cache. Once you've found it page back to this screen and select Found/ The 60Cx will then give you a choice to select the next nearest cache or quit. The geocache you just found is entered on the calendar (if you have that option selected in setup)

Chinook, I tried this past weekend doing what you suggested but it's still not working. When I create a waypoint, I'm hitting the mark button, then change the coordinates to the geocache I want to find from geocache.com and then select Go To, but it takes me to the map not the navigation screen. and when I page up to the navigation screen it's just the plain old screen, not the geocache mode. I think I'm messing up somewhere with the geocache setup. Am I missing a step here or doing something out of order? Just the fun of finding the cache is really the important thing but I really would like to be able to use my new expensive toy to it's fullest capacities if you know what I mean.

Are you changing the symbol/icon to the "closed treasure chest"? Remember geocaching mode only works when you navigate to a waypoint with the symbol you've selected in setup for an unfound cache (the default is the closed treasure chest)

What I have been doing is going to menu, then setup and then to geocache. There the closed treasure chest is highlighted and the drop down menu says "yes" to calendar entry when found and if I hit enter it takes me to that same page that shows all the differnet icons and the closed one is highlighted, but when I hit enter to get out of that it goes back to the page before, showing the closed and open icon (clsoed still highlighted) and the drop down menu for the calendar entry. As long as I hit enter it just goes back and forth between these two pages. That's what has me confused, the closed chest is always highlighted when I go to it so I'm thinking it is always "on" being that it's the default mode. I know I must be doing something out of order, it can't be this complicated. I do appreciate your patience on this, I'm thinking mine is going to run out before yours. :)

At this point use the Quit key to exit setup and save your selection. This should be the only time you have to visit setup unless you want to change something. You do not have to do this every time you want to use geocaching mode.

Now any time you navigate to any waypoint that has the "closed treasure chest" your GPS will automatically switch to geocaching mode.

Ok, should there be a closed chest icon at the top of my screen like where the battery strength, 3D and light symbols are? Because I don't have that. Just tried making a way point again, hit GoTo and it went to the map page not the compass page and when I page up the the compass page it's still not in geocache navigation mode. Does the closed chest automatically save when you quit out of setup?

When you create a waypoint are you changing the symbol/icon to the "closed treasure chest"? At the top left of the same screen where you're editing the waypoint coordinates change the symbol (highlight it and press enter to bring up a screen where you can choose icons from a list).

Eureka!!!! Chinook I finally got it. I had been completely overlooking the blue flag at the top of the waypoint page where I have been editing the waypoint location. It never dawned on me to scroll up there and highlight that and then change it. I guess that's what you've been trying to get thru my thick brain but I didn't understand. I appreciate all the help, you're definitely the man and I owe you a beer or two at the least. Thanks again.
