When a gps unit shows a magnetic bearing (to a destination) is this
computed internally or is satellite info used. Was wondering about the
constantly moving magnetic north pole.

Based on the grid bearing from the current (satellite) position to the destination point with the magnetic variation either derived (automatically) from a lookup table built into the firmware or from user configuration input.

Manufacturers from time to time will include updated variation models/tables with firmware releases.
