I am in the process of getting a new GPS, (my old models are Magellans 3000XL and 4000XL) have been very reliable and tough with the normal wear and tear of using them hunting/fishing/ATV riding etc for the last 20 yrs. I have settled on a Garmin model 60CSx, which seems to fills my needs perfectly in that I need and require an external antenna and 12 volt power vehicle power scourse for ATV and 4x4 use.

Is there a simple and reliable way that I can check the gps and get the newest up to date operating system/version in this model?
What is the newest version for the 60SCx model of gps.

After checking the online places the price range from $250 to over $500 for the same model etc. Why is there that get of difference in the same model??

I spend 99% of my time in the western states hunting/fishing and want to include some topo maps for these states. Which map series is the best for my interests?

The price difference often depends on how reliable the seller is. Often extremely low prices are a sign of a scam or a less than honest retailer. For example, the super low prices only apply if you buy their overpriced accessories which bring the price up quite a bit.

The OS for the gps itself doesn't change that much - you download updates from Garmin.

Firmware updates can be downloaded from this page (link) The latest is Ver. 3.70 as of Jul 02, 2008. You can also use WebUpdater— "Garmin's free new application that automatically detects and installs the most recent version of operating software for your compatible Garmin GPS."(link)


I don't think the hardware has changed much. Different region versions are listed here (link).

What is the best topo map series for the Western part of the US, that will work with this Gps?

Not sure about the best but I'd suggest to first look at the free maps at gpsfiledepot (link).
