I would like a color GPS that does maps that *I* make, such as maps I download off of USAPhotoMaps from http://jdmcox.com/.

I currently use a Pocket PC (Dell Axim X5) with GPS Dash software and GPS receiver.

What would be a good unit that wont cost a fortune for me, that uses AA batteries?

I will primarily be using it for hiking in unfamiliar territories (hence topo) and some geocaching.

Id like to be able to load LOC files from an SD card and follow the legs, or just go to a co-ordinates in that file.
