Many thanks for all the help you folks have provided in these forums. I just purchased Topo 8 and a Vista HCX. Both installed and updated without a hitch. Mapsource is 6.14, Topo is ver 4, and the Garmin is ver. 2.60. Computer is Vista. All work fine. My problem is a lack of understanding, not the software or the unit.
When everything was ready, I got in my car and drove a bit, and created 3 waypoints. I went back home, and saved the track, then uploaded the waypoints and track to the Topo 8. Everything worked fine. Then I saved the track and waypoints in Topo, and then printed the map as "My First Track". No problems so far.
Later that day, I decided to create a route in Topo 8, and intended to download it to the HCX, and run the route the next morning. This is where the problem started.
When I clicked on "File, New" in Topo 8 to create the route, there were no waypoints. The 3 waypoints I created were in the "My First Track" file, but not PERMANENTLY in Topo 8. The only choices I could find were to either "copy" and "paste" the waypoints from the track file to the new route file, or upload the waypoints from the Garmin all over again. So, how do you get the waypoints to STAY in Topo 8 when you save the track and route files for later viewing, and then create a new file for whatever thing you want to do next? As always, many thanks in advance for your help. Bob Landry

Waypoints, tracks and routes are saved in a GDB (or GPX, MPS, etc) file when using Mapsource and have NOTHING to do with the map you had loaded while you created/loaded them.

If you want to use those waypoints again, just open the file that has them and then do a File/Save As and give it a different name. Or, copy them from the open file to a new blank file.

If you have more than one map product installed, you can observe this by opening a new file (blank) and making waypoints. Change the map from the dropdown list of available maps (only visible if more than one map installed) and you'll still see the same waypoints, etc. They are not associated with the map.

BTW, Topo USA 2008 does not do Autorouting. You can prepare Direct or Off-Road (straight line) routes and transfer them to your GPS, but you cannot do "Follow Road" routes.

Thanks, Bob. Do you know where I can purchase one of those dunce caps you used to see in the movies? I need one really, really bad. Autorouting isn't an issue-I bought the HCX for my mountain bike. Have a 2720 for my vehicles. Thanks for your fast reply. Works like a champ. BobL.

This is not related to the problem you are having, just information.

If you want to get auto routing, like having the GPS which street you should turn on, you will need to purchase the "City Navigator" software.

As for the waypoints, when you use the GPSr to create a waypoint, it stays in the GPSr until you erase it. It is not associated with any map. You can use Mapsource on the PC to download the waypoints from the GPSr, organize them, rename, add additional info, etc. Then you can download these new waypoints back into the GPSr.

I don't have a Vista, but do have a 76CSx, and they should work the same way. You should be able to use your GPSr and have it display all of the waypoints it has. Select a specific one, and tell it to go to it.
