I was looking at the article entitled, "Generating Custom Garmin GPS Maps"
http://www.gpsinformation.org/adamnewha ... mapper.htm Has anybody here tried this? Could I do something like this with a Garmin StreetPilot 2730

Sort of.

I've made custom maps that I can upload to my 60Cx but I haven't produced the basic map as described in that article. I've imported tracklogs and converted them to roads and creating a transparent overlay map that shows my tracklogs over my Topo (or Metroguide) maps.

The principle is the same and I use MapEdit to create/draw the map, cGPSmapper to create the Garmin-compatible IMG file and then MapsetToolkit to install the IMG file in MapSource. Then I can combine my "tracklog map" with Topo and Metroguide and upload the gmapsupp.img file to my GPS.

It works and the necessary programs are free.

I found this site this evening and it has snowmobile trails. I did successfully download this to Mapsource, but when I download the maps to my Garmin StreetPilot 2730 they don't show up. I suspect that the 2730 isn't configured to accept this like handheld GPS units are.

I checked the Garmin website and your 2730 can have additional maps uploaded to it.

I haven't tried the actual maps on GPSsledmaps but I use their tracklog files and convert them to maps which do upload to a 60Cx and a zumo.

Did you first install the sledmap in Mapsource or did you use Sendmap to go direct to the GPS?

When you used "Send to Device" in Mapsource, did it appear to run correctly - i.e. no errors reported in Mapsource or on the GPS?

If no errors, then do the new maps show up in the GPS Map / Setup / Info screen?

There are transparent and non-transparent maps at GPSsledmaps. If you used a non-transparent map you will probably need to turn off all the Garmin maps, including the Basemap. A transparent map will be visible over the Garmin map. You may need to be at a particular zoom level to see the new map.

If it still doesn't work, and you want to troubleshoot it, post a few more details.

The maps work on my Zumo. I had to turn the City Navigator maps off for them to show up when zoomed in.
