I have the same GPS as a buddy (Garmin 76csx) Can we buy a a dvd version of city navigator or a topo map and share the dvds? Is it locked to one unit or can it be used on two? Thanks,S

The current versions of City Navigator provide a single unlock code so that the maps can be unlocked to a single GPS unit.

The TOPO maps do not use unlock code. However, the EULA provides that you can install the maps to GPS units that you own. Installing them to other units would be a violation of the license.

Thanks for the response. So if I owned two of the same gps units I could use the same topo dvd for both but not the city navigator?

Yes.

And they don't have to be the same units. They just have to be compatible with the maps.

I thought Garmin had/has changed their policy with regard the 2 unlock arrangement except in the case of mapsource Bluecharts where the SAME unlocked area could be used on 1 other GPS by the SAME person?

I don't know about BlueChart.

For City Navigator North America v2008, you get a single unlock code.

The topo maps don't use unlock codes.

Blue Chart (stand-alone) is the only product to continue offering a second unlock at no charge, for the same region.

I am also in the same boat, wondering if WorldMap needs do be unlocked, wishing to share software with some guys in my army unit who have garmins. I have a Etrex Vista HCx in the mail and was wondering if WorldMap will work on the gps. I am able to have my buddies WorldMap run on my computer fine but i fear that when i try to hook up and upload maps onto the GPS it will ask me to register/unlock or something. Also, when you say Topo maps you are talking about both Topo 2008 and the older Topo maps that require no unlocking?

Both of those topo maps, and WorldMap, do not use unlock codes. The text of Garmin's license agreement permits you to use your maps on all compatible Garmin units you own.

Using your buddy's World Map on your GPS unit would be a violation of the EULA.
