I have a Garmin 60SX gps system. While traveling/moving, the elevation is not giving me a reading. Do I have to set something on the device in order to get this read out information. Thanks. Any advice would be appreciated.

A reading where? You can display elevation on more than one page. Do you have elevation selected as one of the fields in the trip computer page, or the compass page for example? As well as all the options on the altimeter page.

The 60CSx is totally customizable, just be sure that elevation is on one of your display screens. I have it on the "Trip Computer" screen. If you don't see it, hit "menu" then select "change data fields" and scroll through the options until you find "elevation." You can also add elevation to your map page or just about any other page if you want.

Thanks - Here is more info on this subject. I do have the Elevation data field shown on Trip Computer screen. However, while traveling the elevation will be shown, then the next time I review it there is a series of blank dashes. I turn the machine off and then it shows back up again. But it will go back to the blank dashes once again. It works - but it doesn't stay on. This is the only function that I am having problems with. Is it my machine or am I missing something. Thanks.

How many satellites are visible? You need to have a "3D" view to get elevation, the more satellites the better. It usually takes my 60CSX a minute or two to find the new elevation after I turn it on at a new location. If all you're getting is dashes, there might be something wrong with your unit. Have you called Garmin?

The dashed lines in a field mean that the data aren't there. I have water temp and depth fields selected in various pages and those show dashes when the Tx isn't connected. I've never had dashes in the alt field.

Call Garmin.

I got great help when first setting up the data input stuff and also clarifying what data are available in active logs and lost in saved logs - none of which is even mentioned in the manual.

I called Garmin - they suggest I recalibrate my GPS - I did so on the altimeter(?) screen - still having the problem - during my conversation they commented on the version of the software has changed and has been up-dated. I bought my unit in Jan 2007 - could the software make that much of a difference?

how to I up-date my GPS Unit's software?

Thanks

I update all of the units software and I have not had a problem since.
I really suggest checking for updates and updating all the units software quarterly! TPM
