I want to be able to enter a Lat/Log as a destigation, name it, save it, & have the GPS navigate to this point.

I also want to be able to mark & name a waypoint or destignation.

I also want to be able to view my current Lat/Log position.

Is either the Magellan 4040 or Garmin 600 series capable of this? If not is there one that is? This is easy as pie on a marine unit but I have been unable to find anyone who even knows what I am asking when it comes to car units.

All (as far as I know) of the Garmin Nuvi series will allow all of these. I have a Nuvi 350 and I frequently use Google Earth to find a location and input the coordinates for navigation to that point. Second issue: The Nuvi will store and retrieve up to 500 waypoints (destinations). Third issue: Simply touch the screen, and you view your current coordinates (when in map view mode). From what you have asked, a Nuvi 350 is exactly what you are looking for.

If you key in a lat/long and it's not on a road - what happens?

It doesn't matter where the coordinates are. You put the coordinates in and tap "show map", and you will see where those coordinates are, whether it's the middle of a lake, middle of a field, or a highway. I'll have to verify that with my 350, but I'm sure that is the case. If I don't post again, I have found that to be the case.

I just put the coordinates in for an empty field adjacent to Buckley AFB in Colorado. When I told it to show me the map, I was looking at that same point on the GPS device.

Sorry to belabor a point, but then I input coordinates for the middle of Lake Eustis in Florida, and it showed me right in the middle of the lake.......

after you put the lat/long in... and you then select it as a destination what does the unit do to "autoroute"?

i.e. does it know the "nearest" road?

Yes. It will get you as close to the coordinates as possible using its internal mapping software. In the case of the examples I have cited, instead of asking the device to show me a map of the coordinate location, I could have told the unit to "GO" to the coordinates, or I could have "SAVED" and named the coordinates. In the latter case, that would make it one of the 500 available waypoints that the unit can store.
