What are you wanting the software to do for you?

I have a HP TC1100 tablet notebook and am using MS Street and Maps 2006. The software is ok, but you have to click on a button to reroute if you miss a turn. I don't like that I have to look down to get the reroute.

I want to know what software has:
3d viewing
autoreroute
advance warning of when to make the turn (maybe manual config for freeway/city driving)

I've seen the Tomtom software in action and like it, but can't tell if they sell the software for PC.

I have recently installed Microsoft's Streets & Trips on an older laptop (connected to the Serial Port, the only interface on my Garmin etrex Legend b/w model).
I have made several attempts in the Streets & Trips software to "find" and "recognize" the Legend - no success. The laptop's Serial Port is config'd as COM1 - as the software recommends. Last week I successfully downloaded (from Garmin's web site) an update to the Legend's software, so the physical connection is proven.
In just a few weeks time, I'm taking a 3000 mile road trip, and I hope to utilize the Streets & Trips program linked to my Legend to provide 'live' data.
At the moment, my "insurance policy" is to buy the combined box of the Streets & Trips software with the GPS Locator. That's another $100, slightly more money than the $19.95 sale price I recently paid for the Streets & Trips software!

Any troubleshooting/operational suggestions?

Garmin Road Trekker is the interface on your Legend set to NMEA? This is what S&T is expecting for real time data.
