I was reading that TomTom is selling information about user's driving habits and locations to the government. I can't figure out how an ordinary GPS can send any information to the government or anyone else; it has no transmitter that I know of. Does anyone know how this is done? Is there a secret radio in the unit?

Just a guess but it would be by the same way that some automotive units receive traffic data. I'm not sure if that's via WFi or a cell phone (GSM?) connection.

More info about the TomTom issue (link)
