I own the Garmin GPSMap 76CSx which has a removable mini SD card. I want to know if I can load georeferenced satellite images or aerial photos onto the memory card and use them as a background on the GPS. Or, am I restricted to only maps provided by MapSource, Garmin, etc.?

The maps/images are ones I use in ArcGIS regularly so, given enough memory in the GPS, should work fine if Garmin GPS allow that.

Sorry, your out of luck. Garmin's proprietary vector based maps, only.

You can actually make GarminG GPSr readable maps from photos, scanned maps etc, but it is a very long, involved and complicated process using various pieces of software. You have to pull it into one program to change the format. You pull into a next program to have it draw out what is in the picture. Then you convert it to a Garmin GPSr readable map, then transfer it. I started and gave up!
