Can I get an explanation of waas beta 3? Does it require a different config for the receiver?

Also What makes a gps -- waas enabled? I thought one could use exisiting channels on a gps.

WAAS Beta-3 is a performance standard for Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers thatallows for LPV (localizer performance with vertical guidance) approaches at many airports in theUnited States. LPV approaches allow for low-visibility landings without the need for expensiveinstrument landing system (ILS) installations for each runway. It is widely expected that manyregional airports will be certified for LPV approaches in the next few years, reducing the numberof aircraft diversions due to low visibility

This would most likely be an aviation GPS.
