The latest issue of American Rifleman contains an ad for a Bushnell Onix GPS unit that is very interesting.

Does anyone have experience with this unit? Thoughts/evaluations?

I did get a chance to touch one in a store last month, but there was no opportunity to even turn it on, let alone take it outside. The clerk seemed to be from the fish finder side of the electronics, so that wasn't any help either.

All I really know is they are out, the feel in the hand was pretty good, and the concept has merit. There is a good amount of info at http://www.bushnellgps.com/

Thanks, Allory. I use a GPS while trail riding with our horses. The Bushnell could be an interesting option.

I've been looking for a GPS for awhile, and really need one that has a topographic map feature. I'm from the Brunton Compass school of land navigation, so switching to a GPS will be quite a technological leap for me. So far I have not done it, having kept on using topographic maps and the old compass.

A friend recommended this website to me, and this is the exact same question I had. I'd be really curious as to any opinions on this unit, particularly as it might compare to similar Garmans.

Take a look at the Delorme PN-20 color handheld with their Topo 6.0 software. You can upload maps, Aerial Data, satellite data from your desktop to the PN-20. See it at www.delorme.com.

I was trying to use a Magellan eXplorist XL as a receiver to front end the Delorme Street Atlas software and decided to get it all from one vendor. I saw the Bushnell add too and decided the Delorme was similar with better software.

I also suggest the Bushnell ONIX 400. Cabela shows it online, so I assume it should be arriving very soon.

The part I like best about Delorme's PN-20 is doing your planning with the desktop software.

The DeLorme is interesting. But, the Bushnell has the power-saver feature that really makes sense, especially if you are planning a several hour trip out in the bush.

The Delorme will go 22 hours on 2 AA e Lithium batteries and it has a power saving mode. With a spare set of batteries you can go almost a whole weekend.

nsew45 - that might just cinch the deal! It sounds like Delorme has a real contender. They sent me an advertising booklet the other day. I'll now give it a much closer look. Seems to me the Delorme is priced competitively, too.

It's now been a few weeks since this thread started. Has anyone actually purchased and used the Bushnell ONIX in the field? If so, please post a review of your experiences!

TIA!!

Still hoping for feedback on folks using the ONIX, or the DeLorme unit for that matter!

From what I've read most of the reviews are early on in its release and they were having problems with the new XM weather working correctly. I can't seem to find any information or reviews for this device for this year. I looked at the Delorme GPS unit which I was impressed with the amount of ways you could use it, but I was interested in the Onix for the abiltiy to read current weather conidtions. Is their any other GPS that can do this besides the Bushnell?
