Hi guys...hoping i might be able to find some advice and direction here...

Basically interested in trying some Geocaching and learning a little bit about GPS.

...so I bought an older Magellan MAP 410 handheld.
Only cost me $30.
Might not be the the best or the newest equipment, but its what I got to get started.

I downloaded the manual for it, put some fresh batteries in and powered it up.
Following the manual, I am attempting to "initialize" the unit,
however I can't seem to follow the instructions/steps as printed.
Different screens are appearing.

For example...I am supposed to enter an "elevation" which I am unsure of...but the screen for that also has a lat/lon address which doesn't match mine (as far as I can determine), and the instructs don't show anything about altering these numbers.

I am completely lost as it is in the "GPS world" and totally new to GPS devices.
I wondered if anyone else here had experience with this particular unit (MAP 410) and could guide me to some degree?
or maybe I should detail my initializing process and look for advice?

I have searched here for related articles (MAP 410 that is) but haven't found any.

I have no direct experience with the 410 but generally the first time a unit is turned on after a long period it needs to receive fair bit of information from the GPS satellites before it can determine it's position. To do this leave it somewhere with a clear view of the sky for a half hour or more.

I've moved your post to the Magellan section of the forums where hopefully someone familiar with this exact model will help.

Edit to add: See http://gpsinformation.net/main/slowlock.htm for information on the two types of data, Almanac and Ephemeris.
