Okay, Imagine if you will, Garmin's new line of Nuvi's (the 40, 40LM, 50, and 60..)

You go for a road trip, the screen is cluttered by the track record, so you press the [Speed] button on the map page,
see [Reset] at the bottom of the screen, then check on "Reset Trip Log", expecting it to clear the breadcrumb trail...

...
...
what the....? Okay, try it again.. Now, this can't be right?? :( :x

Nope, it's not an error (according to Garmin Tech Support). You Cannot clear the track record this way.

How do you do it? Master Reset! (the touch the lower-right corner while turning the device on) .. If you don't have the favorites
saved elsewhere, possibly by Custom Waypoint Loader, They're wiped too!

How could Garmin botch this? Reset Trip Record, also erased or gave you the option of saving the track record.. instead, unless you do a master reset, it's staying! Right now, with all the travels I've made since Black-Friday, the screen is cluttered with the thin green line, unless I uncheck the [Show Track] option.. there's NO way to erase it otherwise.

many have voiced, in a review on the devices, that Garmin does put this back, in the next firmware update.

Interesting. I haven't picked up a Nuvi yet, I'm still using Magellan 5145TLM. I'm glad you mentioned the issue with clearing cookies, I'll keep my eye on it and see if they fix it. If they do, I may be looking at picking up a new Garmin GPS

A reply from Garmin's tech support, as many others have gotten, states that they have no intention, and that the ONLY method, is doing a reset.. Which, in my opinion, is counter-productive, since you now have to reset almost all of your preferences, which have been reset to Factory default, as well as deleting the track record. :x Personally, a drawback and a detraction by Garmin, which had been delivering a quality product.. Someone else mentioned a slightly nefarious motive to Garmin not wanting to replace the Delete Tracks option, something about wanting to deliberately use the gathered track information for improving their mapping by salvaging the track data from reclaimed (traded in, or sent back for refurbishing) ,, I hope they're not that diabolical.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if that was their motive.
But they could at least have the common courtesy of telling you as much and giving you the option of not allowing that. I mean who really wants some mystery person to know where they've been going?

Do you REALLY need to DELETE the trip log data - why not just HIDE it?

"Settings | Map | Trip Log | Show / Hide"

True, but some of us also do a little bread-crumb tracking ourselves on other mapping programs.. So, if you just hide it, It's not removed from memory, just suspended.. But, once you turn it back on, Guess what's still there, and added to, unless you delete it?

It's bothersome, to need to do the warm reset, and need to reset ALL of your preferences! (display, language, alternate vehicle icon, on-display info.) the simple "Delete Track" option, made a simple and non-brute way of removing that old breadcrumb trail, for a fresh one.. To say nothing, of the simple fact, unless you do the reset to remove it, it will continue to fill memory space (yes, It WILL!) with the GPX file until it says to delete it itself, but by then it'll be near a 1.2GB text file. (I already stripped out a good amount of the alternate language files, non-english voices, unused vehicles, etc. into a 7-zip archive on the internal flash.. so I can cheat, saying 1.6GB)
