New to the forum. Got a question. I've got a 2 Gig SD card in my Nuvi 780. I tried to download maps for Lower 48 and it won't hold them all, so I had to take South East portion. When I power down and pull the SD card to see if it's full by sticking it in my computer, it's empty. Is the SD card only for storing music and other things, not map data? Is it not possible to get the whole 48?

Garmin models have a limit on the number of map segments they will handle. A segment is a subdivision of a map. So you may hit the segment limit before you fill up the memory.

I don't have direct experience with your model but I believe maps can be transferred to internal memory or to the SD card. Some models support multiple sets of maps. A best place to start is the Mapsource manual in the section called Loading Maps to Your Garmin GPS Unit.
