I am thinking of buying my GPS, Magellan Explorist 500. Basically, I am looking to get maps of different cities in Canada and plan my trip accordingly and back. I should be able to zoom-in/out on the map and my current location at ease. Would I be able to do that with 500?

Also, a friend of mine, wants a portable voice activated GPS. Which one do you recommend?

Do you mean you want to control the GPS using voice commands, or a GPS that talks to you using voice?

I meant GPS that tells you when and where to turn.

Do you mean you want the GPS to tell you "turn righ in 500 feet", or "turn right on main street in 500 feet"?

Usually, most GPS units can only use maps by the same manufacturer. Have you looked at the Magellan website to see if they have maps for different cities in Canada? Usually, maps are sold for the entire country, not just for a city.

As for zoom in/out, again, that is the function of a 500, not the map. Their website should tell you if the unit can zoom or not. They usually can.

Most of the Garmin products will do that, I have owned Magellan and Garmin products I find the Garmin's to be much more user friendly personally.

Just something to consider too.
