We hav a Garmin 76CSx and on the hikes we have noticed a discrepancy. We hike in and we get a reading of 9.74kilometers. However on the way out, over the same trail we get a total of 22.4 kilometers a difference of almost 3kilometers extra on the way out. We did have forest all the way and we us a external aerial on the backpack. Can't figure this out. any suggestions?

I know you have a very good setup with the remote antenna but you should still check the tracklog for weirdness. Multipathing (signal reflection off topography, vegetation, etc.) and add distance to a tracklog.

If you left the GPS turned ON while you were at the turn around point, you'll have accumulated at lot of random location readings. Look at your tracklog and see if there is a cluster of points at this point. Delete them and check the "new" distance.

Next time, try turning it OFF when you are stationary for an extended time.
