I'm currently looking for a GPS module that can be used with the TI-MSP430F149.
The emphasis is on easy set-up and low power consumption.
There doesn't have to be any display, it just has to receive NMEA sentences and allow the MSP430 to parse latitude, longitude and velocity.

Any suggestions?

Garmin has a number of GPS antennas only units that output NMEA. However, many inexpensive GPS units with a display, also output NMEA. This way you can use it as a portable GPS unit when you go hiking, and when you want to connect it to your TI-MSP430F149, you can do that too. By the way, what the heck is a TI-MSP430F149?

One other thing. I may be wrong, but I don't think velocity is part of the GPS. You will need to calculate it.

it is a microprocessor. The main use of it is to take care of the processing of NMEA signals. The device Im building is used mainly for sensor and measurement purposes.

One other thing. What level of accuracy are you looking for? Most consumer grade GPS will give you a fix within 5 to 10 meters. If you want something like within a foot or two, or within a few inches, then you will have to go with professional models used by surveyers, and they costs thousands of dollars.

While there are numerous manufacturers, a look at Garmin's OEM Sensors page will give you an idea of what configurations are available. Most will output the NMEA sentences containing the data you require.

NMEA sentence info is available here.

do yourself a favour and get the mediatek mt3 chipset. wire it directly into your microprocessor circuit.

Sorry for this late reply. I didn't know that somebody was doing the same
crazy things as me.
I have developed a hand-held GPS with a MSP430 F 169. So in your case,
you could use exactly the same design since the F149 is 100% pin
compatible.

Look at that:

Now I have a thinner GPS module that can be used with the same
design in case you want to save a few grams.

Beside this, there is plenty of room for the MCU to perform other
operations since the only thing it does is reading the GPS and parsing
the NMEA data. As you apparently need other measurements, that may
be a good off-the-shelf solution for you.

Well, that's about it. If you have any question, please post a question
here or send me a private message.
