Hi Everyone,

Garmin has released software version 2.8 for the eTrex Vista HCx on Oct 13th 2008 as per link below.

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download ... sp?id=3709
The link mentions the following changes.

Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.80:
Fix 'Highway Page' shutdown issue with menu key operation.
Correct power-on failure issue.

Changes made from version 2.60 to 2.70:
Improve distance calculation in odometer.
Fix system freeze issue.
Fix shutdown issue when browse detail map.
Correct user grid.
Disable route calculation icon when GPS is off.

Would like to know if anyone has tried out this new firmware or the earlier version 2.7 & their results with it.
I've been useing version 2.6 for several months & still suspect the odometer tends to indicate higher than actual distances covered. This is mainly when used at typical walking speeds. Version 2.7 claims to have improved distance calculation on odometer.

There is a long thread on the Geocaching forums about this issue.

http://forums.groundspeak.com and then go to the GPS forum.

Wow, this was really expected by the HCx users. I was actually a 2.60 user and always had a hard time when the device gets stuck when we use it at its peak. The 2.70 version firmware fixed all system freeze issues but the unexpected power failure issue was a real pain in the ass. I guess the 2.80 version is good and free of all bugs. I am looking forward to update the firmware of my device.
