Hi, I have a Sony Notebook with a GOBI 1000 Card with an integrated standalone GPS.
Here is more info on the card: http://www.gobianywhere.com/files/gobi1000_overview.pdf

The gps receives data (can see that when using VisualGPS) but it never gets a location fix/lock. Looking at the gps sentences, it seems that either the signals are not strong enough or the data gets corrupted or the antenna has a problem or ??? Since it happens anywhere, something seems wrong.
It had worked at some point but stopped and I am not sure what changed.

Thus far, no one was able to help me :( . No one with this machine seems to have the same problem or is writing about it in the forums and Sony just asks to send in the laptop or reinstall the operating system - not very helpful.
I am providing some of the data readout below and hope that some of you can read this and may get an idea about the problem.
If anyone has an idea, please let me know. Thanks. Robert

Are you using the notebook indoors or outdoors? (Hint: Check out the brochure - all of the pictures show the users in outdoor situations! )

It will almost certainly need to be outdoors to get a reliable first fix; it may or may not be able to re-establish a fix indoors in some situations once it has established a good solid lock, but it will generally lose the fix indoors in most buildings, unless you are near a non-metallised window. (Many GPS units won't hold a fix in ANY indoor locations - you need a high-sensitivity unit with a good antenna, and even that won't work away from windows etc.)

How long have you left it (outdoors) trying to get a fix? For a "cold start", it might need 15 - 30 minutes to get a first "cold fix". "Warm" starts might be a lot quicker (when you are outdoors); depending on antenna sensitivity, it may or may not be able to get a fix for a warm start indoors (near a window).

Hope this helps!

Thanks, I will try that and report back. I had tried it inside at some point in the past and it worked. I had tried it outside in my car more recently for maybe 5 minutes and that did not. I will try again and we'll see.
Based on your suggestion I assume that you think the reason for missing/corrupted data in the sentences might just be a reception issue, right?

Based on the $GPGSV it has 13 satellites. $GPGSV indicate very weak SNR or none at all as indicated by the double ,, The $GPGSA sentence indicates it is in auto mode (2D/3D) with no fix available and no fix would be consistent based on the low or null SNR.

Tends to indicate a reception/antenna issue of some sort?
