I am using my gps more and more for hunting. Are the 1:24000 maps for garmin vista hcx an asset for hunting purposes or am I just as well off without topos? I thought it would be a good addition but am asking opinions from present users----thanks

Topo maps can be a great asset, but be sure to check out the free maps at gpsfiledepot.com before you consider spending ant money. The official Garmin maps do offer some advantages, but most of us find the freebies more than satisfactory.

For hunting you can virtually fly over with these two websites.

http://dhost.info/usngweb/

http://www.floridadisaster.org/gis/kml/viewer.htm

But what makes these special is live mouse display of US National Grid coordinates and the standard version of Lat/Long. Click on any spot and a balloon will pop up with the coordinates which can be entered into the GPS receiver. You can also turn on grids and with [PRINT SCREEN] and use of MS Paint, make ¨hasty maps" of small areas for daily use with grids over USGS topos or aerials, etc. For more about National Grid see the main page.
