I wish someone that has both an iphone and a gpsmap unit would put them down on a picnic table outside and take a phone of the lat and long that each unit displays. I've alway been interested to see how much difference with would be between the position indicators.

I have a related question on the iPhone 4.

Does the iPhone 4, or any of the previous versions, require a signal to multiple cell towers before it will show the latlon? In another words, if I am out in the middle of the ocean, thousands of miles from any cell tower, will it still display the latlon?

And, if the phone doe get a signal from multiple cell towers, does the iPhone use the cell tower info to improve the latlon?

The original question's result depends greatly on whether the device is really using GPS, or just locating by tower. My Touch Pro 2 will locate by tower and alternate my "position" every few seconds between a point 2 miles southeast of her and a point 1.5 mile northeast. back and forth, back and forth, every few seconds. Turn on GPS, and it's within a few feet.

"Location" on a phone doesn't mean GPS by any means. Tower triangulation is good enough to tell you waht neighborhood you're in. Maybe.
