I'm planning on making a GPS purchase in the near future, most likely it will be a mid range Garmin. In the past I've used hand held units but don't own one and have played with several auto units in rental cars but don't own one yet. I'm curious about using the auto type GPS in the woods (in rare occasions), understanding the hand helds are going to be better suited, more durable and waterproof.

Does the auto type give you any elevation features when you are off road/trail or are you in a big sea of green? If not, can the software be loaded into a auto type unit for the occasional camping trip? Can MGRS or lat/longs be plugged in and navigate with them (on foot and off road) with a auto type unit? Can way-points be entered? Could I determine my positoin i.e. get a lat/long on my position in a emergency situation? Is it possible to switch from color mode to B/W in order to save battery life?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Dave

I have a bottom of the line Tom Tom and I have not found any available elevation information. I have gone through all of the menus and it does not appear to be available. Nuvi might have it but I can not say.

Dave,
The Garmin Nuvi 500 is waterproof and on sale for a day or two yet at REI. The link to a review should answer most of your questions.
