We have a university project that will reconstruct a historical part of an Italian city in 3D. I am thinking of taking some photographs and will also have to explore the site on foot. So, I am considering using a GPS device to get a rough survey of the terrain and to locate my photographs. I have never used GPS before and am looking for an advice on what to buy and which software/workflow to use (I have a Canon 20D). As usual, our budget is limited but we can spend some cash so I would be interested to hear of both consumer-oriented and professional options if possible (even if for the future). A device that could be as precise as reasonably possible, that would be registering altitude, had compass, could incorporate maps and could reliably transfer the information into EXIF (even if not in the field) would be great.

As the task in question is a historical reconstruction, we would have to use detailed, large scale custom maps. Any suggestions as to what software can allow us to use such maps in the GPS device and/or with the generated data would be great too.

Thank you for the ideas.

The best accuracy you can expect from recreational grade GPS receivers is +/- 3 metres (10 ft). A step up to submetre accuracy will cost several thousand dollars. Vertical accuracy would be about half as good.

If you can let us know what you expect from " as precise as reasonably possible" we can give alternatives.

I know some time has passed since you asked your question, but I just got an ad from Adorama. They are selling a couple of gadgits which seem to be designed to link to your camera and log the date time lat. lon. and altitude of every picture you take. I couldn't tell from the ad exactly how they work, but it looks like what you are looking for. Maybe if you talked to Adorama they could help. Beware though, Adorama is a New York City camara store and they will try to sell you all kinds of junk you don't need. Do some research on the manufatures web sight first.
