Modern GPS devices work all over the world; all you might need to add is additional maps.

A lot depends on whether you want a unit for hiking or for driving; hiking units are smaller and easier to carry and have longer battery life. Driving units tend to have shorter battery life since they are usually plugged into the car's accessory plug while in use. The driving units have bigger screens and usually have voice prompts for turns.
