I've got the opportunity to order for free one of the above units. This is not the gpsmap 76, just the basic 1mb unit. I've got zero experience with any gps models and will use this for hunting and logging waypoints on streams for fishing. Is this model worth it for free or should I wait and purchase one of their other models as the 76cs(x) or 60cs(x)? This will not get used on a frequent basis. Most reviews are from a few years ago as Garmin has obviously upgraded to models with more mb.

Thanks much for any advice.

It is still being manufactured by Garmin (link) and the price is right so why not? It will give you a chance to experiment and also get some 'hands on' with the 76 series form factor. Note that it's computer interface cable requires a serial connection and your PC may not have a serial port.

It will work fine for waypoints but only has a limited tracklog capability ( Track log: 2,048 points, 10 saved tracks)

I still have this model as a backup.

Thank you for your input. Since I'm very limited, rather extremely limited in tracklogs, do you mean I can only set up a minimum number of waypoints? What I'd like to do is find my access points again when I search for new locations for my fly fishing streams.
For hunting, it would only to locate the car when finished. I do not need to retrace my steps if that's what you mean by tracklogs. Is 1 mb enough to have lots of waypoints saved?

Tracks are sometimes described as 'bread crumb' trails which show where you have been on the GPS screen. They are useful for retracing your steps if need be or to build a simple 'map' of frequently used roads or trails.

The 1MB memory of the 76 is only used for POIs (Points Of Interest) and comes from the factory with a Marine Point Database (Cities with population 200K and above worldwide, Nautical navaids for North and South America, and Tide stations for the US only)

The 76 has a capacity for 500 waypoints.

Thank you again. Looks like it may be worth the price to play with and get familiar with these items. Have a good 2009.
