Just as the other forum entry, I am shopping for a GPS and have no idea which one I should buy. I don't want to spend much more than $300.00 for everything, and I've been looking at the Garmin Vista HCx and the Garmin Legend HCx. Then there's the other eTrex models that appear the same but aren't--I just don't know. So, I'm here asking the professional opinions of those already immersed in this brand new field. I'm an avid outdoorsy person, I hike, backpack, bowhunt, fish, etc. and have always thought about buying a GPS, but never have. (I'd also like to be able to use it for driving around in foreign cities as well.) I've always relied on topo maps and a compass, but have grown tired of the process. I don't get lost easy, but I have been lost in the woods before, and I've walked into forests bowhunting and come out in the really wrong place a couple of times. My question is, which GPS is right for me in the line of Garmin GPS and do I really need all the features of the HCx models? (I'm pretty sure I want Garmin but I've looked at Magellan too.) There's just too much information to sort through and I'd like to hear what some people have to say that have used these GPS. Thanks in advance.

Those are two great units. You likely won't be disappointed with either.

The difference between them is that the Vista HCx has an electronic compass and altimeter while the Legend HCx does not and relies on the GPS satellites for this information.

So basically it comes down to what it important to you. If you are okay with the GPS compass and altitude, then you will be fine with the Legend HCx. If you prefer an electronic version of these, then go with the Vista HCx.

You definitely want to go with the HCx models as they have the high sensitivity receiver which will be very useful under tree cover. Second, they have expandable memory in the form of an optional microSD card.

If you need information on gps fleet tracking devices, you can check out http://www.gpsfleetguide.com. The product I recommend is blackbox GPS units; you can find it at http://www.gpsvehiclesystem.com
