I know this is not a new question but the answers to similar questions are usually unique to individual requirements.
I want a GPS for use with hunting. I don't need a GPS for the car since one has a factory GPS and I use a NUVI 200 in the other. I would like topo maps pre-loaded or a least bundled with the unit. I'm not sure if there are any differences between hunting, hiking or geocaching but I basically need to store some favorite locations with some information about the location and be able to backtrack my footsteps (leave a trail). I don't need heavily detailed topo information, but would like to be able to visualize the contour of the surrounding area. I am pretty stuck on wanting a color display. I was looking at the DeLorme units since they also have the aerial photo overlay but I am not really sold on DeLorme and although the aerial image seems like a nice feature, I don't want to buy a unit that includes it and overlook more important features or product support. I see Bushnell also has a model with similar features but I somehow doubt Bushnell makes it. I know Garmin is the preferred choice and probably what I will buy. I just don't know which one is the best adequate one to get without spending a lot of money. I am prefer to spend up to 200 dollars but I am willing to go to about 300 if it means getting something better that makes sense. I prefer maps built into the GPS as opposed to buying a basic model and carrying paper maps. I don't plan on carrying paper maps in most cases because I usually hunt in familiar territory and don't need the GPS to get me back home. I really want to to record information about locations and landmarks I hunt in and to navigate the land more efficiently or "getting from point to point in the most direct manner." Again, retracing my steps is a must have.

I would recommend a Garmin. They make a quality product and because of their huge user base there are a lot of after market accessories available as well as free mapping.

See Garmin's On the Trail Product Comparison page (link) for mapping handhelds. One of the eTrex model line will fit your budget.

This is one source of free US Topo for Garmins http://www.miscjunk.org/mj/mp_main.html Also see http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/.
