I picked up a GPS unit a few years ago. I’ll leave the manufacturer anonymous because I’m sure most dedicated units have these issues. Half way through my daily commute many days, I hear a loud SLAM! After I regain my bearings and realize that I’m not in an accident, I realize my GPS unit has fallen from its mount and bludgeoned my car stereo system. I’m frankly amazed I don’t have to replace either yet. (or that I haven’t gotten into a wreck).

To be honest, I’m not too impressed even with the newer window mount units out there. I’ve always been able to get where I need to go with somewhat acceptable accuracy, but I get led straight into a mess of traffic a lot of times.

Has anyone heard about these new crowd-source navigation apps out there? You just download it to your phone and it gives navigation details plus real time traffic updates. Based on everyone’s speed, it determines road delays. Sounds much more accurate than the generic new station traffic updates. Plus on some of these apps, you can even flag speed traps, road construction sites, and accidents to help alert other drivers. I am thinking about making the switch because these traditional GPS companies are going down and this new technology looks like the way of the future.

Has anyone had any experience with these crowd-source applications? Good or bad?

I REFUSE to use those window mounts just for that reason!
One of the best solutions is to use some Silicon Adhesive, you can easily peal it off with a razor blade and not damage the glass. A little rubbing alcohol to clean the glass, then apply a bit to the suction cup WITH THE GPS OFF! Let it cure overnight and you're good to go.

I personally prefer a cup holder gps mount. I have a cup holder on my center console so this works well.
