I am seeking a navigation software to use in an OEM application. I would be looking for routing, itinerary, and points of interest. For hardware, I am going to be using a ruggedized laptop. Other than an antenna, do I need any other hardware?

What do you suggest and why?

I see Garmin sells their API. Would purchasing this software be a good value, or am I buying more than I need? Are there less expensive but as useful APIs out there?

There are tomtom, navigon and so on. But I'm not sure where they would sell the products or not. You could also have a look at Zorro. It also provides navigation software.
