I am looking to buy the MapSource Topo for US. AT REI in Seattle the copyright of the version they were selling was late 90's. Is the software really that old? What is the current version and does anyone have insight on when a new version is going to be released?

Well I eventually got my own answer on this. The software really is that old. Garmin feels that terrain features don't change much so whay update. My take is that the technology of the screens on the newer GPS units could definately support more detail maybe 1:25000 instead of the 1:100,000 which is the current level of detail. Just my 2 cents...

That doesn't work on the GPS receiver unit though, which is where the MapSource Topo has it's benefit.

Agreed. Only the Garmin software works on Garmin units.

If only that product actually covered the entire US it would be great, but it doesn't - just some national and state parks.

This is true. You would need to check the coverage with your needs. Fortunately for me much of Los Angeles, where I use it mostly, is there.
